Identity and Belonging: From Orphan Thinking to Living as God’s Child

This reflection connects directly to our Rooted, Renew, and Sent Guide, where we begin with the theme of identity and belonging. If you have not downloaded the guide yet, you will want to start there first.

The opening question of the guide asks:

Where are you living from fear or striving instead of trust, and how is God inviting you to live more fully as His child?

That question can feel big or even vague at first, so this post is meant to help you slow down and actually work with it in a practical way.

Why identity matters more than we think

Identity shapes more than we usually realize. It shapes how we answer questions like Who am I really? and What is my purpose? It also shapes how we respond when life feels uncertain, disappointing, or out of control.

In our Foundations: Gospel Living workbook, we talk about identity as a core foundation of what it means to follow Jesus. Before we think about habits, obedience, or growth, we have to pay attention to where we are living from.

Most of us do not consciously choose fear or striving. Those patterns tend to surface quietly. They show up in how we handle criticism, how we measure success, how we relate to God, and how we treat ourselves.

The Rooted, Renew, and Reflect Guide invites us to notice those patterns without judgment and bring them to our awareness.

The Orphan vs Child framework

One of the tools that we hope you find helpful comes from The Gospel-Centered Life by Robert Thune and Will Walker. The Orphan vs Child chart compares two ways of living:

  • Orphan mindset: Living from fear, insecurity, performance, or control
  • Child mindset: Living from trust, dependence, freedom, and belonging

You can download the chart here and use it alongside the guide:

This chart is not meant to label you. It is meant to help you notice patterns that are already present.

How to use the chart with the guide

Set aside about 15 to 20 minutes. You do not need to overthink this.

  1. Read through the chart slowly.
As you do, pay attention to what stands out or feels familiar.
  2. Mark what resonates.
Circle or highlight phrases that describe how you tend to react under stress, pressure, or disappointment.
  3. Return to the Rooted, Renew, and Reflect question.
    • Where do I see fear shaping my decisions or relationships?
    • Where am I striving for approval, control, or security?
    • What feels hardest to trust God with right now?
  4. Look at the child side of the chart as an invitation.
Not something to achieve, but something God is already offering.
Ask, What would it look like to live from this place instead?

Bringing this into prayer

This work is not about fixing yourself. It is about bringing what is real into God’s presence.

You might pray:

God, this is where I notice fear or striving in me. I want to see it honestly and without shame. Help me learn how to live as Your child here.

You do not need to force clarity or resolution. Awareness itself is part of renewal.

A final encouragement

The Rooted, Renew, and Reflect Guide is meant to be walked through slowly and resting in God who already knows you fully. Psalm 139 reminds us that God searches us and knows us, not to expose or condemn, but because we are never outside His presence or care.

As you work through this first question, you will likely recognize both orphan and child patterns in yourself. Our growth is a in process, so in different seasons we will likely see times where we identify as both. The great news is that we can change. God is the only thing that is unchanging, He remains steady and faithful.

For those who are in Christ, nothing you notice here surprises God. There is no discovery that changes His posture toward you. Your security as His child does not rest on how well you understand your fear, striving, or trust. You are a child of God because of Christ, not because you have sorted yourself out.

God does not wait at the end of your growth. He meets you here and invites you to live more fully from what is already true in Him.
